Europe’s First Accredited Digital IHE for Medicine
EDU is accredited as an institution of Higher Education, subject to directive 2005/36/EG
EDU and all of its programmes are accredited in Malta by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA).
Moreover, as of February 2020, EDU’s medical school with a programme in Medicine has been cooperating with the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University. The collaboration covers curricular topics, digital contexts and the implementation of supervision as stipulated in Article 24 of the EU Directive 2005/36/EG.
On 4 May 2023, EDU’s Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Medicine degree programmes were accredited by the AHPGS (Accreditation Agency in Health and Social Sciences).
Institutional and Programme Accreditation in Europe
EDU, through Digital Education Holdings Ltd, was accredited on June 28th, 2018 as an Institute of Higher Education under the Maltese Education Act with license number 2018-10 by the National Commission for Further and Higher Education (NCFHE). The NCHFE has been replaced by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) as of January 2021.
The “Bachelor of Medicine” was accredited by the National Commission for Further and Higher Education within the European Qualifications Framework, followed by the “Master of Medicine” in 2019, together constituting EDU’s programme in Medicine.
With a 3-year Bachelor followed by a consecutive 2.5-year Master’s in Medicine, the programme in Medicine is comprised of a total of at least 5,500 hours of combined theoretical education and practical clinical training, its certification of at least 334 ECTS complies with the relevant European requirements.
Supervision by Maastricht University
In accordance with Article 24 of the EU Directive 2005/36/EG, EDU operates the programme in medicine under the supervision of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University.
The approach which Maastricht University has committed to undertake and provide in relation to the scope, content and modalities of the supervision of the education supplied by EDU and its Teaching Hospitals, revolves around six main themes including:
- Assessment and quality assurance.
- Review and evaluation of the medical training.
- Staff training.
- Appointment of curriculum committee.
- Expert meetings and audits.
- Read the latest review report.
AHPGS Accreditation of the Bachelor and Master of Medicine
The Accreditation Agency in Health and Social Sciences (AHPGS) has accredited EDU’s study programmes Bachelor of Medicine (B.Med.) and Master of Medicine (M.Med.) on 4 May 2023. AHPGS is an interdisciplinary and multi-professional organisation that evaluates Bachelor and Master programmes in the fields of health and social sciences. AHPGS is approved by the German Accreditation Council (Akkreditierungsrat) to run system and programme accreditations for higher education institutions and universities on behalf of the competent authorities in each of the sixteen German Federal States (Bundesländer).
AHPGS follows the requirements of the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG). The decision regarding the accreditation of EDU’s study programmes is based on the following accreditation criteria:
- Program aims and learning outcomes
- Curriculum design
- Personnel
- Facilities and learning resources
- Study process and student assessment
- Program and quality management

Recognition & Approbation within Europe
Completing EDU’s Bachelor and Masters of Medicine entitles the holder to apply for approbation throughout the EU. EDU’s programme in medicine has been designed to fulfil the requirements to practice as a physician within Europe, including in Germany, in accordance with the EU Directive 2005/36/EG.
The Medical Council of Malta is the competent authority for conferring the certificate of equivalence and conformity of the medical programme, amounting to automatic recognition of the degree within Europe. Presently, EDU is in discussions with the Medical Council for securing automatic recognition. You may consult with the Medical Council of Malta directly.
Meanwhile, in order to pursue a license to practice medicine, graduates should apply for individual recognition with the competent local authorities within the desired European Member states.
EDU expects its first graduates in 2025.

ONCE I GRADUATE WITH EDU´S DEGREE IN MEDICINE, WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO GET APPROBATION TO PRACTICE IN GERMANY?
Once you successfully earn the Degree in Medicine, you will be issued a certificat , in accordance with Article 24 of the Directive 2005/36/EG.
With this, you will apply for approbation at your local Bezirksregirungs office, following their listed instructions.
HOW DOES EDU´S DEGREE IN MEDICINE LEAD TO APPROBATION TO EUROPE?
Medical training completed after 1976 in one of the member states of the EU or the EEA is regarded as comparable to German training. In the case of Member States which joined later, the starting date of the training after accession must be taken into account, § 3 (2) BÄO. Then the procedure of automatic recognition according to Directive 2005/36f/EC applies.
This is the case for EDU, which is based in Malta, a full member of the European Union. EDU, liscenced as an Institute of Higher Education by the NCHFE, operates its teaching under supervision of Maastricht University and offers a Degree in Medicine comprising of over 300 ECTS points earned along more than 5,500 theoretical and practical learning hours. Hence the programme fulfills all requrements set by the EU for protected protected professions as of Directive 2005/36/EC applies.
