B.Med Application Process
There application process consists of 3 stages:
Phase 1: Application / Questionnaire
During the first phase the candidates fill out a biographical questionnaire and prove that they fulfil the formal eligibility criteria for being admitted to the EDU Medical Human Medicine degree.
Phase 2: Online test (in partnership with ITB Consulting)
This online cognitive test is state-of-the-art and allows us to rank all applicants according to objective criteria in a manner that is without bias. This ranking is necessary because organisational restrictions at EDU and at our teaching hospitals mean that we can offer a place of study only to the best qualified candidates.
Phase 3: Interview
If selected, candidates will move into the third and final phase of the admission process: The structured interview. These interviews are conducted by specially trained interviewers who assess the motivation and soft skills of our candidates. This is the time where applicants and admissions have a more face-to-face opportunity to become more familiar with each other. Based on the interview, candidate results from the online test, and documentation, the best applicants will be offered to become a student at EDU.
The online application consists of filling in an online form containing basic contact information, as well as your proficiency in the English and German languages. You will be prompted to fill your academic and work history, as well as any relevant awards or certifications, into a data form. We recommend having your CV handy.
On the next step, you will be asked to upload the following documents:
Leaving Certificate of Secondary Education
Scans of a valid passport or government-issued ID
Police Clearance Certificate / Certificate of Good Conduct
German Language Certificate (This is not mandatory for applicants who are native in German or have conducted their formal studies in this language)
Note that all documents should be submitted in the English language.
If the documents were not originally in English (Leaving Certificate, Passport/ID, Police Clearance, Language Certificate) these documents must be translated then appropriately notarised.
Please keep in mind that if you are invited to the final stage of the application process, you will be asked to send your application also by post, including physical certified copies of the mandatory documents.
Last, we ask you to indicate your preferred location for your clinical placements by selecting your top 3 choices from the list of hospitals that EDU is partnered with.
Once you are satisfied with your application, you can submit it so that the EDU admissions team can review it.
A motivation letter is a very important part of your application as it is the most direct way for you to tell us a bit about who you are. It shows us your intellectual personality and why you are a great fit for our university. At EDU we not only want outstanding students, we want students who are eager to study medicine with us and a great fit to our energetic student body.
Your motivation letter must be in English, no more than one page single spaced, standard margins, with a standard font (Times New Roman, Calibri, etc.), please include in the header your full name and the program to which you are applying, as well as your signature and date at the bottom.
Ideally a motivation letter should contain the following:
Why you want to pursue this specific degree, how does it help you achieve your future goals;
How does your previous education, work history, life experience, hobbies and personality make you an especially ideal candidate ready to face the challenges of studying medicine;
This is your moment to shine and show us why you are the best fit for our school – we look forward to hearing more about you!
If German language is not your mother tongue, you will need to show us a language proficiency by either showing you have studied or worked within this language, or by virtue of a language certificate.
For German language, we accept:
Goethe Institut: Goethe-Zertifikat B2, ZDfB
TestDaf: TDN 4 to TDN 5
BAMF: B2 to C1
Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH): DSH 1-2
During the application process, you only need to submit digital copies of the documents required. However, if you are admitted, we will ask you to give us the physical copies during the matriculation process for archiving.
We currently accept scans of original documents in English. If your documents have been issued in a different language, please submit a digital copy of a notarised translation into English.
Keep in mind that during the admissions process, you commit that all documents submitted are true, complete and have not been modified in any way. Any misdemeanour in this regard will lead to instant expulsion.
The online test, which is run in partnership with ITB Consulting, is focused mostly on cognitive skills. Hence, there is no special preparation required, but you may wish to brush up on basic math calculations. The test will be conducted in the English language and will take up to 45 minutes.
To take this test, you will need a computer or laptop with a strong internet connection, as well as a functioning webcam, microphone and speakers.
The interview is conducted by specially trained interviewers who assess the motivation and soft skills of our candidates. It’s conducted in English and the questions focus on allowing us to get to know you and learn more about your values and personality.
In the interview you will get a chance to personally present yourself and describe your motivation for studying at the medical school to the faculty members. Hence, there is no special preparation required.
To participate in the interview, you will need a computer or laptop with a strong internet connection, as well as a functioning webcam, microphone and speakers. Please, make sure you test your speakers and microphone prior to the interview.
You will be offered to choose from different time slots for an interview with a certain deadline to decide.
If you’ve missed the interview for a legitimate reason, please get in touch with us to receive a new appointment slot. You can get max one new slot for the interview.
From the moment you have submitted your complete application to receiving the news that you have been accepted, it can take up to 10 weeks. In the meantime we are happy to respond to any questions you may have.
The admissions portal allows applicants to login and see the state of their application. Whenever there is a change, they will receive an email notification that will also be reflected in the portal.
Our M.Med (Master of Medicine) programme has been accredited by the National Commission of Further and Higher Education (NCFHE), Malta and is now part of our five year degree in Human Medicine. Students who complete the EDU’s Bachelor of Medicine (B.Med) degree programme are qualified to enrol in our M.Med degree programme to continue to pursue their mission in becoming a doctor.
You do not need to move to Malta to study at EDU. Rather, you can now study medicine wherever you want – be it in the lively city you choose to live in for its vibrant cultural scene and nightlife, or the town close to home where your family lives and your roots lie. You can also manage your own self-study times, using our digital learning infrastructure whenever you need it: 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
Only the clinical phases require your presence at a predefined place and time. You can choose your preferred location and we will do our best to accommodate your wish. Keep in mind that this means being on location for a total of 3 months per year!
The tuition fee does not cover accommodation, travel or any other expenses connected with your clinical rotation.
The curriculum is envisioned for full time students. The study program is structured in modules, each consisting of 8 weeks of online learning, a flex week, 4 weeks practice in a clinic, and another flex week.
During the online phase, you have some flexibility to structure your self-study time each day, but it is not recommended to combine it with part-time work due to extensive time spent on individual and collaborative assignments. For your clinical rotation, you will be in a teaching hospital for 35 – 40 hours a week.

The social learning done in our online teams is an award-winning distinguishing feature of our digital learning format. Our use of digital technologies to deliver high-end educational formats allows for flexibility in both time and learning style. This way of working also allows us to give students individual feedback that is in addition to grades. Students can reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of their results in regular tutoring sessions with instructors.
Medical students who are trained at EDU are dedicated to deliver the highest possible quality of medical treatment to their patients. Therefore, we think that it is compulsory to teach the principles of evidence-based medicine from the beginning of their undergraduate studies. To apply evidence based medicine successfully, students need a profound basic knowledge about statistical variables in addition to traditional medical training and foundational knowledge.
It is paramount that students learn how to deal with data sources according to the criteria of evidence-based medicine and leverage these insights to facilitate the best possible treatment for each individual patient. This approach propels medical education based on scientific findings and accelerates the understanding of current research results.
The EDU Bachelor of Medicine adheres to universally recognised standards and is grounded in a solid foundation of medical research. Going beyond the format of traditional medical instruction, it is inspired by the most reputable modern medical schools and global standards in basic medical education. The point of departure for development of the curriculum is the WFME Global Standards as published by the Institute for International Medical Education (IIME) Core Committee.
The IIME Core Committee developed these “global minimum essential requirements” (GMER) and specified a concrete set of global minimum learning outcomes for each of them. The 60 overarching learning objectives form the comprehensive framework of knowledge that must be mastered by those wishing to pursue a career as a doctor. The curriculum of our B.Med and M.Med degree programmes are constructed around these standards.
Application Deadlines and Academic Year
The academic year at the EDU is structured by Learning Modules.
Each module consists of four elements:
- The first eight weeks of a module represent the online learning phase during which students learn the theoretical bases of the module in question.
- This is followed by one “flexible week” (the flex week) during which students only have to sit one examination, giving students the opportunity to travel to the site of the subsequent clinical rotation.
- The third part of each module, the clinical rotation in a teaching hospital, consists of four weeks of practical training.
- Another flex week at the end of each module allows for the repetition of examinations and travel back to the place of residence of the student.
- Every module thus lasts 14 weeks.
Each academic year thus consists of 3 learning modules, as well as a summer and winter vacation for the holidays.
Summer break should be around eight weeks, winter break around two, depending on the calendar year. For internal organizational reasons at EDU, the vacation periods are set and will be within the range of the calendar weeks 26 to 37. The calendar week 52, i.e. the last week of the year, is intended as a holiday break for all students. This also applies to the first calendar week of each new year.
Please submit your complete application and pay the application processing fee before August 18th to be considered for our current admissions round. We encourage you to submit your application as early as possible, so that we can get back to you if anything is missing. Applications that are not complete by August 18th will no longer be eligible for this admissions round.
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
The standard tuition fee we charge is 19.500 EUR per academic year and includes access to the digital campus and the clinical rotations. Our Tuition and Fees regulation provides a full picture of which other non-recurring fees exist – such as the matriculation fee.
