PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Prof. Dr. Albert Scherpbier is the Interim Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health and President of the Academic Advisory Board at EDU.

Among multiple prestigious positions, Prof. Dr. Albert Scherpbier previously held the role of Dean of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University and Vice Chairman Maastricht University Medical Center (Maastricht UMC+). He is Professor in Quality Improvement in Medical Education.  

Prof. Dr. Scherpbier studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Groningen. His career spans over 30 years as professor, faculty and academic administration member. In 1991, he commenced his time at Maastricht University (UM), initially as Head of the Skills Lab at the Faculty of Medicine. During this period, he also started scientific research into the quality of skills training during the medicine programme. He then obtained his PhD at UM with the thesis ‘Quality of skills training assessed’.  

In 1999 he was appointed as Scientific Director of the Education Institute of the Faculty of Medicine. In 2007 he became Scientific Director of the Education Institute at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University. One year later (2008), he was named Associate Dean of said faculty. From 2011 to 2020, he held the position of dean of FHML as well as the position of vice president of Maastricht University Medical Center (UMC+).  

During his extensive career in Maastricht, Prof. Dr. Scherpbier has made remarkable efforts to improve the quality of education within Maastricht University. He has contributed greatly to the quality of university lecturers and future healthcare professionals (read more: here). Furthermore, he is widely recognized in the field of medical education, particularly for his reports on improving the quality of advanced medical training. Prof. Dr. Scherpbier is also greatly known in academia; he has published more than 500 scientific articles and books and has supervised over 50 PhD candidates in the Netherlands and abroad.
